Multimedia learning is a great way of eLearning that enhances effective learning and engaged audience. There are several studies and research done to improve learning experiences, including multimedia learning forms that ensure efficient outcome of eLearning experience. Mayer studied theories and principles that guide effective multimedia learning outcomes.

The most important principle that Mayer heavily relies on Multimedia learning is Cognitive principle, Mayer’s cognitive load theory emphasizes the use of words aligned with graphics. People tend to pay attention when pictures are placed in close proximity rather than far away (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020). It reduces the extraneous work of the brain when processing information.

The Modality principle describes the use of graphics on narrations rather than on screen text especially when doing animation or similar type of graphics because it overloads the visual channel which is different than the auditory channel and makes it hard or slow for the audience to processe information effectively. Jargon or unfamiliar words are exceptional but with narrations explaining the meaning of the words are more effective (Peck, 2021).

The Redundancy principle violates when different forms of delivery channels are used at the same time for example, the use of narrations over graphics and text is redundant. Its effecient when graphic is used with narrations rather than both text and graphics (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020).

Many more principles such as Coherence, Pre-Training, Segmenting and Multimedia principle state ways to improve the eLearning experience and enhance better learning outcome.

The presentation below is an example of a Multimedia presentation that was incorporated with Mayer’s principles. The content explains multimedia presentation briefly while using Canva tool.
