For this assignment, I am reflecting back on âScreencasting on Educationâ blog post. In that blog post, I recorded a video using screencastify tool explaining organizational tip for chrome tabs. I will be analyzing the video for multimedia learning principles and theories learnt in class.
Process
- Rewatching the video – After rewatching the video, i made a list of the multimedia principles that have been met and those that have not been followed in the making of the video.
Original Video
The list below are the principles that have been met.
- Modality principle – As Mayer stated people learn more deeply from graphics on spoken words than from screen text. (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020). The video follows the principle by explaining activities practically rather than text.
- Redundancy principle â Mayer says âPeople learn better from graphics and narration than some graphics, narration, and printed text.â (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020). In the video, only words and graphics are used therefore the principle of redundancy has not been violated.
- The image principle â In this principle, which says âpeople do not necessarily learn better when the speakerâs image is added to the screenâ (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020). The video doesnât include the speakerâs image on screen which enables the viewers to focus easily.
The principles that have not been covered and recommendations.
Signaling: âPeople learn better when cues that highlight the organization of the essential material are added.â (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020).
In the video, cues that highlight or zoom when focusing on area were not included therefore, using the screencastify zooming tool would have improved the quality of the video.
Coherence: This principle states that people learn better when extraneous material (outside the material that is been explained) is excluded (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020).
Some of the information that was on screen while steps were explained might have been distracting to the viewers therefore, excluding the canva window and desktop apps on the screen will enhance the value of the video.
The Spatial Contiguity: It states that people learn better when corresponding words and pictures are showed near rather than far from the screen (Principles of Multimedia Learning, 2020).
The screen was a little zoomed out thereby making it hard for the viewers to read the text on the screen especially short-sighted people. During remarking, some parts were zoomed in on the tab to have a clear view of the text on the tabs.
2. Recording a new video – In this process, I launched my Screencastify tool and recorded a new video while covering all the principles that have not been covered in the original video and following the recommended tips.
